The Eternal City
It is difficult to list just a few places worth seeing in Rome, since every street has something interesting to offer. Although no vacation lasts forever and the list of places to visit must also be limited, be sure to include:
• Vatican
Visit the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica, go to the viewpoint on the dome of the temple – from there you can see a magnificent panorama of the Eternal City.

• Pantheon
The best-preserved monument of Roman antiquity. An architectural curiosity is the oculus – a 9-meter opening in the dome of the Pantheon, through which daylight enters the building.
• Colosseum
Amphitheater, where gladiator fights took place in the first centuries of our era. Next to the monument is also the Arch of Constantine the Great, and a few minutes’ walk away – the Roman Forum.
• Spanish Steps
The most famous steps in Rome are not Italian, but Spanish. Visited by tourists in droves, they are also the setting for annual fashion shows. At the top of the Spanish Steps is the 16th-century Church of the Holy Trinity.
• Trevi Fountain
A Baroque masterpiece by Nicolò Salvi from the 18th century, commissioned by Pope Clement XII. It was made famous by the film “La Dolce Vita” by Frederico Fellini – in one of the scenes, the heroine enters the Trevi Fountain. Tradition dictates that coins be thrown into the fountain, which is supposed to ensure a return to Rome.
• Villa Borghese Gardens
A picturesque park located in the city center, with small ponds, replicas of monuments and temples of polytheistic deities stylized as ancient ones. A great place for an afternoon rest.
Practical tip
When planning a Roman vacation, it is worth getting a Rome Pass card, which, in addition to being a time-limited ticket for buses, trams and the metro, also allows entry to museums and entitles you to many discounts. If you are under 18 or over 65, are disabled or an art and architecture student – you will enter many museums and monuments for free. There is also the possibility of free entry without age restrictions to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the last Sunday of each month.
Public transport in Rome
The most enjoyable way to get around Rome is of course walking, but it is difficult to cover long distances on foot, especially if you are pressed for time. In Rome, you can use buses, trams and the metro. A useful tool for planning routes is the search engine on the website of the Roman public transport company.

Rome Ciampino Airport (IATA code: CIA, OACI: LIRA) is one of the two passenger airports of the Eternal City, along with Fiumicino. The airport is located 15 km from the center of Rome. The airport is served by ATRAL buses, from which you will have to change to a train or metro to get to the center.
