The city has been of considerable economic importance since the Middle Ages. Agriculture and textile industry flourished in Leeds, thanks to which the city became significant in the economic arena of Great Britain. The people of Leeds are very diverse, so you can find an interesting mix of cultures there. The city is home to several universities and is therefore also the center of student life. Concerts are held in numerous pubs and clubs. In addition, Leeds has cultural institutions, theaters and museums. The Leeds Carnival, which is one of the biggest in the UK, also takes place here.

One of the most valuable monuments of Leeds are the picturesque ruins of the medieval Cistercian abbey located in the suburbs of the city (Kirkstall district). This monastery was founded in 1152 and functioned until the first half of the 16th century, when it was liquidated during the Reformation and since then, abandoned, it began to fall into more and more ruin. Other important sights worth seeing when visiting Leeds include: Gothic Cathedral of St. Peter’s Square (Leeds Minster), the former Royal Armory (now the home of the national museum), Tetley Brewery, Holy Trinity Church, the monumental building of the town hall, the Victorian-style former Corn Exchange and a museum presenting the history of the city, approximately 3 km from the city center industry at Ledds (Armley Mills Museum).
