Alicante – where you can feel the heartbeat of Southern Europe

During the day, the atmosphere here is one of siesta – tourists stroll slowly through the narrow streets, the smells of delicious food come from the taverns, and travellers gather around the numerous monuments to admire the achievements of artists of past eras. Be sure to put on your list of must-see places:

  •  Santa Barbara Castle

A monumental fortress and viewpoint of the bay in one. From here you have the most beautiful view of the city, the harbour, the surrounding area and the Mediterranean Sea. Mountain lovers can hike to the top. However, if you have planned your holiday in a ‘lazy’ version – take the lift (lifts are located on Avenida Jovellanos or Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora), a tour bus or a car.

  • Basilica of Santa Maria

Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, on the ruins of a mosque. It is the oldest church in Alicante, distinguished by its two asymmetrical towers. Visitors mainly admire the richly decorated portal in Baroque style. The basilica is a symbol of the city – you will find it on most postcards.

  • San Nicolas Cathedral

The building was converted from a former mosque into a Christian church by King Alfonso X in 1662. It was designed by the Spanish architect Juan de Herrera. It has a very original blue dome, which can be seen from practically every point in the city.

  •  MARQ Archaeological Museum

The numerous museum exhibitions show the development of the city from prehistoric times, through the Middle Ages, when the Arabs ruled here, to modern times.
In the evening, when the sun goes down, locals and visitors alike enjoy the charms of a city that never sleeps. Then, the aromas of Mediterranean delicacies, such as paella marinera with seafood, entice visitors to local restaurants and the hot salsa rhythms invite them to the dancefloors of the port’s clubs and discos.
