Attractions in Cork

Cork is a charming city that is a major academic and cultural centre. It is strongly vibrant, and with interesting Victorian architecture and numerous river canals embedded in the fabric of the city – you will discover it anew every time you walk around. A short guide will certainly come in handy during your city wanderings:

  • Old English Market

The city’s food market offers a huge selection of local products: meats, fish, herbs, spices, vegetables or fruit. Locals and tourists alike love it, however, not only because of the wide range on offer. It is worth visiting the market to hear the pleasant bustle of everyday conversations, to smell the wonderful aromas of Irish delicacies, and to see the market hall itself. Maintained in the Gregorian style, it has been the focal point of the town’s trade for over four centuries.

  • Blackrock Castle

Built in the 16th century as a defensive structure, the castle was intended to deter pirates and other invaders. Today, it no longer serves as a deterrent, but attracts tourists from all over the world. It lies just 2 km from the centre of Cork, so you can reach it on foot.

  • Butter Museum

A unique museum of one of Ireland’s most famous exports. As you explore the galleries you will see how butter was made in the traditional way in specific historical periods, but also learn how the city developed commercially and economically

  • Red Abbey Bell Tower

The only remnant of medieval Cork. There used to be a monastery here, but only the bell tower remains today and it has become a national monument.
